This video breaks down the basics of what a ProVent Oil Separator is and why installing one is recommended. We will explain service and maintenance schedules and show in detail how it works.

When you take the lid off a ProVent catch while the engine is running you will be able to see just just how much oil mist is in engine fumes. When oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system mixes with Exhaust Gas Recirculation Fumes (EGR) a mixture is produced that attaches to the walls of the intake manifold. These combined deposits build up over time to a point where they severely restrict the flow of air, blocking the inlet manifold and valves, causing reduced performance and fuel efficiency which can be costly to repair. A catch can or oil mist separator is a solution to the build-up of carbon deposits.

The mixture of gases are rerouted as they pass through the medium. Small oil droplets collect on the fibers of the separation medium, they grow, and then exit the filter in drops on the outlet side and collect in the drain tube. The cleaned blow-by gases are then returned to the engine air intake and sucked in again by the engine.

The oil column over time collects excess oil and requires draining at regular service intervals. Draining the oil column is a simple process. Just place a container under the drainage hose and release the valve. Service intervals of 5000 kms are recommended. Maintenance of the ProVent oil separator element is also a simple process. The cover opens without tools and the separation element is replaced. This element should be replaced periodically.

The frequency of change is dependant on the amount of blow-by, Mann & Hummel recommend every 40,000kms for an engine in good condition or when oil wetting appears around the ProVent by-pass valve. Diesel Care offer a range of catch can kits, as a solution to the build-up of carbon in the engine’s intake system. Everything is included in the kits for an easy DIY installation.
