The process is known as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Oil mist and soot particles mix when closed crankcase ventilation (CCV) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) combine. Consequently, the intake manifold walls become coated with a sticky carbon type mixture. It’s the combination of the oil with soot that creates the problem. Over time, these deposits accumulate to the point where they restrict air flow, reducing performance and fuel economy.

By installing an Oil Mist Separator, often called Catch Cans, the oil mist and water vapour are substantially removed from the combination. Thereby taking away the ingredient that allows the soot to stick and cause carbon build up.

Are oil catch cans legal in Australia?

Yes. Oil catch cans are a passive engine protection component and are legal to install on diesel vehicles in Australia. They do not modify exhaust emissions output and do not affect roadworthy or compliance status when fitted correctly.

Are catch cans good for diesel engines?

Modern diesels with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and PCV systems recirculate oil-laden crankcase vapour back into the intake. Over time this builds carbon on the intake valves and manifold, restricting airflow and lowering performance and fuel economy. A catch can captures the oil mist before it reaches the intake — protecting the engine over the long term.

Do catch cans void a Toyota warranty?

A correctly installed quality catch can does not automatically void a Toyota factory warranty in Australia.
